Seven checks before buying a monitor arm
Weight limits, mounting patterns, and desk construction determine whether an arm will work safely.

A monitor arm can recover desk space and make position changes easier. It also concentrates force on a small part of the desk, so compatibility deserves more attention than appearance.
What to look for
- Verify the monitor’s weight without its original stand and confirm its VESA pattern.
- Inspect desktop thickness, edge shape, and material before choosing a clamp or grommet mount.
- Allow clearance behind the desk for the arm to move without striking a wall.
Use before features
Stay comfortably inside the rated weight range rather than treating the maximum as a target. Thin or hollow desktops may need a reinforcement plate recommended for the mounting system.
Use the criteria above while you compare. Prices and availability can change.
